Perhaps you should discard the "if it doesn't affect me" then I won't vote
for it mindset!

Then you haven't taken advantage of the system. According to Texas Law, your
property taxes can only go up 10% per year for your homestead (home you live
in). Maybe you didin't file your homestead exemption and take advantage of
the tax breaks available to you? Otherwise, the tax  increases would have
been limited to 10% per year.
