That's a plausible explanation. But I think it's equally plausible that the last 60 years of subsidized sprawl have left most people living in areas where the only kind of high-density living they can view are slums. (Most people don't get to see the residential life of the average New Yorker; they instead get to see boarded up deteriorated crime-infested neighborhoods in the doughnut-hole around which their sprawlburb has grown).
