Jim Smith, an acquaintance of mine & an avid triathlete was struck by a
car Wednesday at approx 6:30PM somewhere near Circle C. I don't have
many details, but I do know that Jim suffered a broken hip, but is
otherwise very lucky. The vehicle was a BMW, female driver, & I think
she was exiting Circle C on La Crosse near the Veloway. Jim under-went
surgery yesterday & may be released as soon as tomorrow. He's looking at
3 months off the leg.
Even though there are many cyclists in the area of the Veloway, & even
with the traffic light at La Crosse, it is still a dangerous
intersection, blind from both directions on Mopac because it's at the
top of a rise.
Please use caution if you ride in this area.
The southern part of Mopac to 1826 from the Veloway is a sink to
recreational, club and amateur racing cyclists. It would be nice if the
City stepped up & made an effort to heighten motorists awareness in this
area.
