Bob,

I prefer "cowgirl (/boy) shower" to "whore bath" :-)

Peace,

(oops sorry Mike, I intended to send this to the whole list)

The source of perceived body odor is often one's hair. And that's the sort of
systemic halo of nondescript aroma following you around that folks won't tell
you about when they'd otherwise have no problem telling you that your pits are
offensive or that you should "change your shirt fer goddsake." Ladies take note,
if you're bike commuting more than 5 miles, you may want to adapt your hair
style.

When I feel up to doing my 20-mile ride to work (something I haven't attempted
lately) and particularly this time of year, I'll arrive soaked in sweat.

So, I plan and do arrive at work earlier than the rest of my co-workers. Then I
take over a sink in the men's room. I'll give my hair a quick shampoo & rinse in
the sink followed by a sectional top-down body wash (so as not to appear
completely nude) using a wash towel with SOAP & WATER. Using the wringed-dry
wash towel for the rinse I don't really need a towel afterwards although I keep
one handy. All this hygene gear, soap, wash cloth, towel, shampoo, stows away
into a tough zip-loc bag in my desk drawer.

Being prepared to bathe is particularly useful should you get caught in the rain
while riding to work. After a long ride on city streets in the rain, you'll be
covered in carbon black residue that requires soap.

Of course, the "whore bath" is followed by a change of fresh clothes. If my
timing is right, I'm finished with my bath 30 minutes or so before the rest of
the office arrives.

 From the Las Vegas Advisor:

---------------
Monorail Debuts

After six months of costly delays, the Las Vegas Strip Monorail began
operating yesterday, July 15, on the previously announced opening day.
According to riders, the ride is "quiet, though somewhat jerky," and
handrails are lacking in the cars. The cars can travel as fast as 50
miles per hour; the entire 3.9-mile one-way trip to MGM Grand to the
Sahara takes 14 minutes. The $3 one-way fare trumps the $12 charged by
a taxi for the same ride. A $10 all-day pass is available.
-----------------

Cabs in Vegas cost the same for 1-4 people, so the monorail is not any
cheaper than a cab for two people ($3+$3 for monorail vs. $12 / 2 for a
cab).

They supposedly have Bus Rapid Transit on the Strip now too, but
looking at their website I couldn't see how it differed from the bus
service they already had going up and down the strip. I called them a
couple of weeks ago to ask about that, they transferred me to someone's
voicemail, and then I never heard back from them.

This is approximately 17.5 mph average, about the same as most modern
light rail systems do on the street.

Hmmmmmm. Muy Interesante!

I didn't know about the hair thing before, but I guess that explains why I
don't stink -- one might say my dome is a little thin, not to mention that I
generally keep my hair cut pretty short.

I'd like to agree with Colly, Lane and Robbo. I have been commuting into my
new gig for about 6 months, and I, too, am geting by without a shower, much
to my initial surprise. And, I don't think my coworkers are too
irresponsible to not drop me a hint about my presentability.

In addition to very short-cut thinning hair, my other secrets are:

1) A thorough shower just before bedtime or the morning of my commute into
work. Always make sure I am clean and unstinky before I even start the ride.
2) Avoidance of very sunny areas during ride (where possible).
3) Appointment with bathroom mirror.
4) Quick wash and dry with damp and soaped face cloth and small towel.
5) Deoderant.
6) Gold Bond body powder in strategic areas.

Peace,

Just to add to the chorus on this: I used to bike the 12 miles from downtown to the Arboretum with just a restroom refresher (wet hand towel, body spray, deoderant, antibacterial wipes) and change of clothes at the other end. I was very concerned about stinking but am confident that it wasn't a problem. One thing that helped a lot was to shower immediately before the ride and be well hydrated. I did have some trouble with my riding clothes however and wound up adding a full rinse of them in the washroom upon arriving to the routine. Also, I started doing to do the freshen up routine downstairs in the general restroom for the building after getting too many questions about biking (all when I was walking in with helmet in hand before freshening up, but still made me self-conscious). I would leave my helmet with my bike and stash everything in the bag and would take the elevator up looking like I had just driven in like a normal person. Kinda felt like an alchoholic hidin
 g my
addiction, but based on the periodic questions from coworkers ("let's take your car to lunch", "can you give me a ride" - serious, not in a joking way) my bike riding was a complete unknown to most people and even those close to me would forget that I did it. I really do think it is possible to get by without a shower even in Austin's heat.
