Monorail Debuts
After six months of costly delays, the Las Vegas Strip Monorail began
operating yesterday, July 15, on the previously announced opening day.
According to riders, the ride is "quiet, though somewhat jerky," and
handrails are lacking in the cars. The cars can travel as fast as 50
miles per hour; the entire 3.9-mile one-way trip to MGM Grand to the
Sahara takes 14 minutes. The $3 one-way fare trumps the $12 charged by
a taxi for the same ride. A $10 all-day pass is available.
-----------------
Cabs in Vegas cost the same for 1-4 people, so the monorail is not any
cheaper than a cab for two people ($3+$3 for monorail vs. $12 / 2 for a
cab).
They supposedly have Bus Rapid Transit on the Strip now too, but
looking at their website I couldn't see how it differed from the bus
service they already had going up and down the strip. I called them a
couple of weeks ago to ask about that, they transferred me to someone's
voicemail, and then I never heard back from them.
