The methane hydrates in the Gulf of Mexico are a promising source of energy
for the late 21st Century.

nononoo, he's got the right idea, methane is a great fuel, and in
plentiful supply. He's just looking in the wrong place for it. Forget the
gulf of mexcio, just harvest that which emits from my mother-in-law, and
we'd have the saudi's buying from US :).
