Strong Towns did a crash report webinar on this incident and provided recommendations from some experts: https://actionlab.strongtowns.org/hc/en … stin-Texas

As an side, can we really say our fatality rate hasn't decreased? There's probably multiple times more cyclists today than there were even 5-10 years ago, so arguably the rate has decreased.

Still, this incident is a sad example that even in relatively "safe" areas, vulnerable road users are... vulnerable, especially if the driver doesn't see you.

Thank you very much for the update, even though disappointing.

I checked and his case about the robbery was dismissed.

He was sentenced in 2018 to 7 years for the bicyclist assault, but in 2019 he was charged with a traffic collision (which was also dismissed), so I don't know how much, if any, prison time he actually served. I tried to find when he entered and released prison but couldn't find a database that gives either.

WaPo takes a deep look at the issue, with the nationwide Vision Zero effort to reduce pedestrian deaths, which hasn't resulted in fewer pedestrian deaths, though defenders say that's because it hasn't been properly implemented.

Of note is that after public outcry about a traffic calming measure that reduced the number of lanes on a roadway, officials restored the traffic lanes. One of the vociferous opponents of the reduced lanes went on to accidentally kill a pedestrian on that roadway after the removed lanes were restored.

Also of note is a group that (illegally) paints in new crosswalks where they think they should exist.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business … ero-roads/

Thank you. I know that friends and family write the obits. I'm saying that as a family member, I'd have a hard time describing a hit-and-run driver as "overflowing with love and kindness".

It's not that the driver killed someone (if it were truly accidental, that wouldn't call the driver's character into question), it's that he fled the scene. Once a traffic death involves any of recklessness, DWI, or hit-and-run, then it becomes morally questionable…and that would make it hard for me to describe the driver in saintly terms.

28-year-old Leandro Brito-Martinez received a whopping 80-year sentence for killing 14 year-old pedestrian Tobias Soto.

The extenuating circumstances were that police were trying to stop the driver because they identified the vehicle was stolen, the driver fled, driving up to 100 miles an hour and running at least one red light, and, probably, because the driver was Hispanic. It'll be interesting when and if a white driver gets a similar sentence.

Still, since killing drivers of all stripes typically get off with slaps on the wrist, if that, it's surprising to see such a lengthy sentence.

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/william … 022-crash/
