Bicycle Safety and “Superstreets” in Downtown Austin

TxDOT is considering several alternatives for the reconstruction of I-35 through downtown. You may have been following this discussion in the news, most recently with yesterday's front-page story in the Austin-American Statesman

“Superstreets” are a key component of all of TxDOT’s alternatives. These frontage road superstreets are presented as a way to give preference to North-South through traffic; increase speed by 40%; and reduce the number of cross-streets. They describe the project in the following document

Well, FluxBB is no longer supported and traffic is low, so I'd probably shut the forum down. If there's a good migration path to phpBB or something else I might do that, but I'd want to stick with something that is being maintained for security reasons.

That said, there's so much good stuff here that I'd keep it archived however it turns out. I've already archived the forum in case it disappeared, so that would be easy to put up in place of the forum itself. I'm not sure what else I'd do with the domain, but I definitely wouldn't want this all to just disappear.

If that works for you, sure, I'll take it.

Popular YouTuber Mark Rober points out the absurdity of using multi-ton vehicles to deliver a pound or two of food. Drone delivery has been talked about for years, but Rober thinks it's now on the cusp of being a reality, thanks to quieter and safer drones.

The company profiled has actually already being doing this in other cities and countries, including for delivering medical supplies to remote areas in Africa.

The whole CM "faction" thing is definitely not about obeying vs. breaking traffic laws -- both sides are perfectly willing to break them when convenient, as has always been done. It's about control.

And the 22 page "call to action" story got way more bizarre in the hours after this article was written. It might be worth your time to read up on that.

And yes, it's a great article -- and I'm not just saying that because I'm in that last picture.

Regarding reddit ... not really. There's some activity on r/bikingatx, but not a lot, and r/Austin gets some as well.

I imagine that people have mostly moved on to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

You are right, of course. The pitch address was the only means of contact I could find. In the old days, a snail mail letter to the editor was possible but the website lacks even that information as far as I can see.

shows a significant increase in bicycle commuting over the period 2000-2019. All too early for pandemic increases to be included, but in case that is interesting . ...
While there was an increase over 2000-2019, the peak occurred in 2014, and there was a 5.9% drop from 2010-2019.
