The Military Budget as Cookies

This excellent animation from TrueMajority shows in graphic detail (using Oreo cookies) how ridiculously, large the military budget is, and how we could solve many domestic problems with a modest 12% cut. A must-see. (watch it now)

Assault on Andy Whitelock

Cyclist's injuries still a mystery

From KVUE News (original article no longer online), Jan. 8, 2004

Police are trying to determine what happened to an Austin cyclist apparently left for dead along a Southwest Austin roadway. Andy Whitelock, 26, was found Sunday morning at the University Federal Credit Union. He called for help there after walking nearly a mile following an incident on his bike. Whitelock was severely beaten and is recovering at Brackenridge Hospital after more than five hours of reconstructive surgery. Investigators aren't sure what happened.

"If anyone was at that intersection, which we assumed was very safe, he has ridden his bike home from there a million times," said Rosie Whitelock, his mother. "If someone saw something, that they will come and say I saw this and maybe it will help,"

Doctors say every bone in Whitelock's face was broken and he lost two liters of blood.

Injured cyclist can't recall incident

Austin American-Statesman (original article no longer online), Jan. 7, 2004

Police are seeking information about how a man was critically injured in Southwest Austin early Sunday. Detective Matthew Greer said John Andrew Whitelock, 26, had been riding his bicycle near MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) and U.S. 290 about 4 a.m. when he was injured. Whitelock has no memory of what happened, but Greer said his injuries are consistent with an assault.

Whitelock broke into a University Credit Union nearby to trigger its alarm and alert authorities. He remained in Brackenridge Hospital on Tuesday.

"We have some things we are looking into," Greer said. He asked anyone with information to call 974-4402 or CrimeStoppers at 472-8477.

APD DETECTIVES REQUEST PUBLIC'S ASSISTANCE

Austin Police Department Southwest patrol officers responded to a 9-1-1 call of a possible assault on January 4th at approximately 4:00 a.m. When officers arrived at the Federal Credit Union located at 5033 West Highway 290, they discovered John "Andy" Whitelock, 26 (DOB: 11-30-77) in the bank requesting assistance.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Whitelock was riding his bicycle home from a friend's house and sustained blunt trauma to his head, possibly from an assault. Whitelock was transported to Brackenridge Hospital with serious injuries. Detectives believe the incident may have occurred in the 4700 block of South Mopac, east frontage, just north of the Best Buy store.

Detectives are asking anyone with information or any witnesses to the incident to call the APD Southwest Area Command Detective unit at 974-4402 or CrimeStoppers at 472-8477. This case remains under investigation by APD Southwest Area Command detectives.

Jeb Boyt from the BicycleAustin discussion list says that Andy is an employee of the Texas General Land Office.
